but this was a very good end to a bad week for the president. really the best possible end that president obama could have hoped for. mitt romney came out so strong in that debate, president obama lackluster. he got called rusty. detached. not the words he was looking for. >> hold that thought, we're going to talk about that. i want to go back to something, four days before the presidential election is when the next jobs report is going to come out. if they go down even further? what does that mean if. >> it could go down. it could also go back up. >> right. >> this has been an economic recovery that's been a difficult one. the administration says that as well. this was a great jobs report for the president. it broke down past that 8% mark that mitt romney's been hitting so hard in this campaign. >> you can imagine -- >> this is a great day for the president. >> you can imagine the white house and probably the campaign in chicago doing somersaults. does this make people now say, what debate? by most people's accounts, the president was awful, ho

we've seen in the last few weeks. i would say this. i started the whole career at 30 something years plus ago in political debate. i would look for what we call a spring board. and that is to take the things they're talking about all are in the past. if i remember mitt romney, i would move this into the future, the impact of the legislation we've seen and what impact it will have on the future in the next four years versus what he offers in the next four years. i haven't heard enough of that. and if you've seen romney come out quickly with answers, there are one, two, three, enumerated that sounds like real ideas and proposals, she'll appear to be a lot more of a together candidate than we've seen in the past. if he comes out the way he's been generally speaking trying to get obama upset, obama's not going to bite for it. he needs to be really concise, enumerate and one zinger, not a bunch of them. >> thanks so much. >> thank you so much, carol. >> i hope you visit us again. cnn's live coverage starts at 7:00 eastern. delicious sugar-f

next week we also have the vice presidential debate. it will be interesting to find out what kind of adjustments team obama will be making over the next few days. >> let's talk about those adjustments. how is the obama campaign reacting to the president's performance today? >> well, you know, first of all, they are praising his performance, saying it was a rong performance, but they're going after the substance, saying -- criticizing him, saying that his policies, his plans, what he said during the debate last night. there were a lot of flaws, distortions. take a listen to the president's campaign as senior adviser david axelrod on the "today" show this morning. >> i didn't say he was out debated. i think he treated the american people like adults and he told them the truth, which was a f d fundamental distinction between him and governor romney last night on a whole host of issues. i joked that governor romney put more preparation into it than they did into the invasion of normandy. i expected a strong performance. i got a strong perfo
